Many television shows peak somewhere in season two or three (ex: NBC's The Office), when the writers have established a rhythm but haven’t run out of ideas. Bad shows peak even earlier (ex: ABC’s ill-fated Last Resort, a show that wheezed its way to cancellation after only one strong episode). The best shows, however, get better with age (ex: AMC's Breaking Bad), refining the formula, correcting mistakes, and upending audience expectations.

Edge of Tomorrow is about what you’d expect: a fun, futuristic war film, complete with cyborg-style armor and classic Tom Cruise intensity. Yes, the human race faces certain annihilation, but at least we’ll all go out staring into Cruise’s dreamy blue eyes.

Edge of Tomorrow isn’t quite what you’d expect. Sure, it's a fun, futuristic war film with lots of cyborg-style armor, but it quickly becomes more clever than intense, more crafty than crazy. You’ll come for the action, but you’ll stay for the puzzles, as charming as Cruise’s Hollywood smile.

From the man behind Beavis and Butthead comes Silicon Valley, an irreverent HBO sitcom about twentysomething geeks blessed with brains but devoid of social grace. It’s not quite as piercing or insightful as Mike Judge’s best work, Office Space (1999), but it often comes close, skewering the tech industry with a tidy little script as efficient as it is funny.

Silicon Valley follows the (mis)adventures of Richard, a Bay Area nerd who stumbles into overnight success after writing a music-matching algorithm in his spare time.
