My thoughts on the season are still crystalizing (stay tuned!), but in the meantime, I've graded more than 30 of the show's characters on their Season 6 performances. The grades are based on the following question: Throughout Season 6, how compelling was the character, overall? Both the performance and the story itself matter. A great actor can save a boring plot, just as an exciting storyline can make up for a so-so actor. But most A grades go only to a winning combination of the two. If it wasn't obvious already, spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 6 lie ahead! | Coming soon: TheCroakingFrog's official season rating! TheCroakingFrog says: ??? What Hopped: ??? What Croaked: ??? Recommendation Key: See It Now: see ASAP See It: see if you have time Skip It: see at your own risk Forget It: avoid at all costs |
As is my custom, I've added three new category gimmicks for each character. This year:
Good or Evil: My thoughts on whether the character ends Season 6 as a hero (good) or villain (evil). For controversial picks, I attempt to explain myself.
Survival Prospects: My best guess as to whether the character will remain alive at the show's conclusion (now only about one or two seasons away, depending on which rumors you believe).
Pet Peeve: What each character can't stand.

Season 6 Grades, from Highest to Lowest
Lena Headey
Good or Evil: Evil
Survival Prospects: Very low (see: dragons, Dothraki, Unsullied, Arya, Jon, Sand Snakes, etc. etc.)
Pet Peeve: Faith-based ceremonies
With back-to-back A+ seasons, Cersei has emerged as the show's most compelling character, and by staying alive, earns the "Best Villain" title by default. (RIP Ramsay and High Sparrow.)
Bella Ramsey
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: High
Pet Peeve: Forgetful houses
Season 6's biggest breakout performance came from Lyanna, the sassy head of House Mormont who pledges loyalty to Jon and helps unite the North. The 12-year-old actor commanded every scene she was in, outplaying Jon, Tormund, Sansa, Davos and Littlefinger, all at once. Even Tywin Lannister couldn't have done that.
Johnathan Price
Good or Evil: Evil
Survival Prospects: n/a
Pet Peeve: Truant defendants, sexless marriages
While Ramsay became a cliche (see below), the High Sparrow grew into Thrones' most spellbinding villain. In fact, he might go down as the most memorable supporting character in the show's history (shades of Benjamin Linus from "Lost").
John Bradley
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: High
Pet Peeve: Family dinners
The most efficient character in the show, Sam needed only three scenes to earn an A for the entire season. The awkward family dinner and chat with the head maester were season standouts.
Kit Harrington
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: Very high (the dude is basically invincible now)
Pet Peeve: Piles of dead bodies
The long-predicted resurrection was far less interesting than it should have been, the climactic battle far more. Jon's biggest accomplishment, however, is evolving from a dopey Orlando Bloom clone to a legimately compelling character. Three cheers for Kit.
Liam Cunningham
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: Moderate
Pet Peeve: Red women
Somehow, Davos became one of the show's 10 most prominent characters in the space of three episodes. I'm not sure where it came from, but it's clear he's much more interesting playing off Jon Snow than the late Stannis "Tweedledee" Baratheon.
Hafthoor Julius Bjornsson
Good or Evil: Doesn't think for himself, but has to be Evil
Survival Prospects: Low
Pet Peeve: Weaponized monks
He doesn't speak. He barely shows his face. In other words, another stellar season from The Mountain.
Rory McCann
Good or Evil: Good for two episodes. Probably Evil again now.
Survival Prospects: Low
Pet Peeve: Rapists and pillagers
With a surprise intro and wood-chopping prowess to make Paul Bunyan jealous, The Hound was on track for Sam-like efficiency, but an anti-climatic end to his subplot brought Sandor Clegane down a peg.
Ian McShane
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: n/a
Pet Peeve: Murderous visitors
The leader of a small, nomadic community, Septon Ray provided an excellent counterpoint to the High Sparrow. Here were two faith-based leaders, one corrupted by a lust for power, the other saved from a life of violence. Thrones only hinted at this contrast, rather than spelling it out plainly, an admirable example of the show's nuance in storytelling.
Kristofer Hivju
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: Low (feels like the first sacrificial death in the North vs. Whoever's Next)
Pet Peeve: Unrequited love
Tormund has emerged as a capable right-hand warrior for Jon Snow, as ferocious on the battefield as he is on the prowl. The Brienne-Tormund subplot was one of the season's most amusing sideshows.
Sophie Turner
Good or Evil: Good (just pretend she didn't feed her ex-husband to starving dogs)
Survival Prospects: High (I have a naive belief that the remaining Starks will all survive)
Pet Peeve: Sharing critical information
Season 6 was big for Sansa. She fought off Ramsay's henchmen, helped plot the siege on Winterfell and saved Jon's army in the Battle of the Bastards. All the while, Sophie Turner brought heartbreaking emotional heft to the role — she was scarred from her past assaulters, but determined to reclaim her agency.
So why no A? Her inexplicable decision not to tell Jon about Littlefinger. We've seen the cavalry ride in to save at least three battles now (Blackwater, Willings vs. The Wall, Dothraki vs. Slavers). It's not surprising anymore. It's not satisfyingly dramatic. It's overdone. I should blame the writers, but I have to scapegoat someone in the show. Sorry, Sansa.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Good or Evil: Can't believe I'm saying this, but Good gets the square (and yes, I know he paralysed a boy and threatened to catapult a baby over a wall)
Survival Prospects: Moderate
Pet Peeve: Drawn-out sieges
Jaime course corrects after a two-season decline. His very best moments came with Brienne in Season 3, but the standoff at Riverrun was interesting enough to earn a high B for his Season 6 theatrics.
Julian Glover
Good or Evil: Evil
Survival Prospects: n/a
Pet Peeve: Knife-wielding children
Like The Mountain, Maester Pycelle has exactly one mode, always executed perfectly: the old, dodering, hypocritical advisor. If it ain't broke...
Jerome Flynn
Good or Evil: Good, if self-serving
Survival Prospects: Moderate
Pet Peeve: Unpaid favors
He's the perfect Jaime sidekick, playing comedian to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's straightman. Sure, he's not essential to the show, but Thrones would lose a bit of spark without him.
Conleth Hill
Good or Evil: Good?
Survival Prospects: Moderate
Pet Peeve: Believably long journeys
Varys saves a subdued season with a single scene, when he negotiates safe passage for a single mother and her son, in exchange for critical information. It's poltical, crafty and just a little bit sinister. In other words, everything I want out of Varys.
Gemma Whelan
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: Moderate
Pet Peeve: Fickle crowds
I like Yara's spirit, her wily demeanor, the growing chip on her shoulder. She sometimes wanders toward caricature (see: force of will, personified), but it's a caricature I tend to like.
Emilia Clarke
Good or Evil: Good, but with Anakin Skywalker-esque tendencies (impetuous, angry)
Survival Prospects: High
Pet Peeve: Diplomacy
A better-than-average season for Dany, but haven't we been all these places before? Captured by the Dothraki? Inspiring troops from atop a dragon? I liked it better the first three times.
Iwan Rheon
Good or Evil: Evil
Survival Prospects: n/a
Pet Peeve: Misbehaving dogs
First he was evil. Then he was really evil. Then the show reminded us another 27 times. He'll still go down as a great TV villain, but Season 6 was just too much of a good — er, bad — thing.
Kristian Nairn
Good or Evil: Uninterestingly Good
Survival Prospects: n/a
Pet Peeve: Insecure doors
I get it. Hodor is lovably loyal. He's self-sacrificial. His dopey grin is endearing. He's just not all that interesting. Yes, the "hold the door" climax was among the season's best scenes, but one A+ moment can't save a C+ character. We'll call it a B overall.
Peter Dinklage
Good or Evil: Jaded (but Good)
Survival Prospects: High
Pet Peeve: Awkward silence
I'm probably grading Tyrion on a curve, but such are my high, high expectations for Peter Dinklage. His late interactions with Dany overcame a bit of sluggishness in early Season 6 episodes.
Carice van Houten
Good or Evil: Thought for three seconds then remembered she burned a girl alive. Evil.
Survival Prospects: Low
Pet Peeve: Misinterpreted prophecies
She should be as compelling as the High Sparrow — complete with creepy convictions, blindly loyal followers and oblique references to gods, fire and blood. Instead, the Red Woman is often more confusing than eerie, more obnoxious than enlightened. A mixed bag.
Gwendoline Christie
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: Moderate
Pet Peeve: Overeager suitors
She's loyal and she just completed her mission. Great. But it turns out Brienne is much better when she's not getting what she wants. Brienne as dutiful Sansa bodyguard seems like a step back.
Daniel Portman
Good or Evil: Obviously Good
Survival Prospects: Low (the "good-natured squire" is too easy a character to pick off for future plot purposes)
Pet Peeve: None (which is the problem)
I suppose Thrones needs 100% good characters like Podrick and Hodor to contrast with all the shades of gray. But damn if they aren't bland and boring.
Maisie Williams
Good or Evil: I'd say Good but she literally just served a dude a pie with his sons baked in it
Survival Prospects: High
Pet Peeve: Blunt, wooden objects
I was slightly higher on Arya than most critics (and even actor Maisie Williams herself). The village play was perfectly tuned comedy relief. Arya's final, sons-baked-in-pie reveal was satisfyingly spooky. Unfortuantely, all the "faceless men" stuff has long worn thin.
Natalie Dormer
Good or Evil: Leaning toward Good? Maybe "Scheming"
Survival Prospects: n/a
Pet Peeve: Exit-blocking crowds
Among the show's best rising stars, Natalie Dormer's Margery was subdued for most of Season 6. I blame the script, not the acting. Still, a shame we won't see her again.
Alfie Allen
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: Moderate
Pet Peeve: Dick jokes (still too soon?)
By all accounts, Theon should be among the show's most compelling characters. Alfie Allen has crushed the performance, and the Theon-Reek-Theon journey has arguably been one of the show's deepest, most emotional transformations. But the Iron Islands plot felt rushed, and Yara's rousing speech at the brothel didn't land for me. Here, I blame the confines of the television format more than anything.
Modern Technology
Good or Evil: Dragon
Survival Prospects: Low (calling it now: Dany wins the war but loses Drogon in the climatic battle)
Pet Peeve: Deviations from routine
It's time to teach this dog some new tricks. We know he can breathe fire, and we know Dany can ride along, given enough show budget and bad CG. How about a few more dragon battles? Hell, I'd take dragon-based Small Council meeting just to see Drogon do something different.
Iain Glen
Good or Evil: Boring. Sorry, I meant "Good"
Survival Prospects: Low
Pet Peeve: Younger, more attractive men
Jorah's season was basically Hodor's season, but without a super memorable moment. He is 100% loyal and devoted, and that's that. Wake me up when he does something interesting.
Michiel Huisman
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: High?
Pet Peeve: Queenly departures
I'll put it this way: I preferred the old Daario actor — Ed Skrein, from Season 3. Quirky, shifty and unpredictable, the old Daario popped in each scene. Meanwhile, Michiel Huisman's Daario is essentially a Ken Doll (maybe that's the point?), with nothing more than one-liners and suave remarks. Meh.
Aiden Gillen
Good or Evil: Littlefinger's entire brand is avoiding definition on this exact question. Pass.
Survival Prospects: Impossible to say
Pet Peeve: Spurned advances
Littlefinger owned Seasons 3 and 4 (scheming in the former, executing in the latter), but he's since fallen off, both in screen time and general intrigue. In Season 6, he's mostly a sideshow. Here's hoping for Season 7 comeback.
Nathalie Emmanuel
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: Low (Dany's army will incur losses...Missandei feels like an obvious choice)
Pet Peeve: Idle chatter
Thrones attempted to make Missandei a straightwoman against Tyrion's comedic stylings. Unfortunately, Missandei-Tyrion is no Jaime-Bronn. The matchup fell flat.
Jacob Anderson
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: Low (see Missandei)
Pet Peeve: Alcoholic beverages
See Missandei.
Isaac Hempstead Wright
Good or Evil: Good
Survival Prospects: High
Pet Peeve: Relevant plotlines
I'll say it. The flashbacks were neat. But I still don't get this plot. Or this role. The fact that Bran's C grade is a massive improvement from last season tells you all you need to know about the role.
Max von Sydow
Good or Evil: Honestly I don't care at this point
Survival Prospects: n/a
Pet Peeve: Living in the present
The Three-eyed Raven should be my favorite character on the show. He is wise and mysterious. He can flash back to key events on command. He's played by the excellent Max von Sydow. But honestly, what is this dude's deal? I still don't know what the flashbacks accomplished, what the big tree was for, or what Bran is supposed to do as his successor. In most other cases, I'd be happy to "wait a season to find out," but we've been waiting six seasons. Enough is enough.
Dean-Charles Chapman
Good or Evil: Means Good, enables Evil
Survival Prospects: n/a
Pet Peeve: Mass murder
He's pouty, glum and easily manipulated. I accept Tommen as a plot device, but he's by far the least interesting king, lord or commander Thrones has ever scene. Props on his death scene (in my mind, one of the most artistically shot in the show's history), but I can't say I'll miss him.
Cedric Henderson
Good or Evil: Meh
Survival Prospects: Meh
Pet Peeve: First-person dialogue
For approximately the first seven times, the third-person speech was at least different and interesting ("A girl must..."). Then it became repetitive, then a meme, then just dumb.
Faye Marsay
Good or Evil: Evil?
Survival Prospects: n/a
Pet Peeve: Logical plot progressions
This is Game of Thrones, not Roadrunner vs. Wile E. Coyote. I found almost every Waif-vs-Arya scene contrived and cartoonish. The final chase scene was silliest of all.
